After one of the craziest months in living memory, we at Darley Anderson hope that you are all keeping well and staying safe. In this time of deep uncertainty it is incredible to see the way that the nation has come together to support our key workers and to keep spirits high.
In keeping with this message, this month we wanted to bring the adventure to you, and so we are excited to announce our March Book Club Pick. This month’s pick was chosen by the wonderfully talented Hazel Prior. Her debut novel Ellie and the Harpmaker, set in the idyllic Exmoor countryside, captured readers with its ‘beautiful love song of a story.’ Her second title, Away with the Penguins, is ‘unflinching, stubborn, funny and moving.’ It provides the perfect adventure to take you away from life in isolation. Published on 19th March in the UK, you can get your copy now in Ebook and Hardback.
But without further ado, this month’s pick is The Library of Lost and Found by Phaedra Patrick.

Why Hazel Loves it…
I’ve recently discovered Phaedra Patrick’s books and I’m a big fan. The Library Of Lost And Found is a fun, quirky read with a premise that draws you in straight away. The main character, Martha, is a kind-hearted soul. Conscientious and self-effacing, she is endlessly doing chores for other people, none of whom appreciate her at all.
The discovery of a certain book leaves Martha agonising over a bizarre mystery and we, the readers, are as desperate as she is to get to the bottom of it. Enter Zelda, one fabulously wild and wilful grandmother. Excerpts from Martha’s childhood slot in with the present action and we are given further insights through a series of beautiful stories within the main narrative. Little teasers come throughout, then the pace quickens towards a dramatic revelation.
Phaedra Patrick describes awkward social situations so well that you feel your skin crawl. Then there’s the delightful seaside setting, peppered with details that bring everything so alive. This is a book full of empathy: it enables us to see the characters from different perspectives, understand them at ever deepening levels and forgive (at least some of) their failings. The characters are unforgettable, and you’ll be left thinking about them long after you finish the book.
