Lee Child’s unstoppable global success

‘It’s automatic: Reacher gets of a bus and Child lands on the NYT bestseller list’ – Booklist, 2017

The 23rd novel in the iconic Jack Reacher series, The Midnight Line, has whipped readers round the world into a frenzy, racking up No.1 after No.1 on numerous bestseller lists.

In the UK, The Midnight Line rocketed to the No.1 spot, unseating fellow publishing giant Dan Brown, and has held the position for three weeks so far.

Across the Atlantic, it’s a certified smash hit: No.1 on the New York Times bestsellers list, instant No.1 Bestseller on Amazon, instant No.1 bestseller on Barnes & Noble, instant No.1 iBooks bestseller. It also hit the No.1 spot in Australia and New Zealand, which is one of the first countries in which Lee achieved a No.1.

As other countries begin to publish their editions, we are sure to see more of the same fantastic success, as Reacher and Child both prove, nobody does it better.

Lee also appeared on the hit Scandinavian chat show Skavlan for their special New York  edition. He chatted to host Fredrik Skavlan about jogging, fish and chips and fighting – and how he came to write the phenomenal global bestselling Jack Reacher series.

So many congratulations to Lee on this unmatched, unstoppable success.

Martina Cole shines on Graham Norton

The Queen of Crime, Martina Cole, was interviewed on Graham Norton’s Radio 2 programme on Saturday 11th November. With her trademark charm, insight and candour, Martina discussed her writing 25 year career and successes.

You Don’t Know Me – a startling debut

A new and exciting voice in the crime and thriller world launched this month with a staggering debut novel.

Imran Mahmood’s You Don’t Know Me is a crime book with a difference: the story is told entirely in the form of a defence speech from a young black man, accused of murder. The reader becomes the jury as the unnamed defendant presents the eight pieces of evidence and only one thing matters – did he do it?

The audio book, narrated by Adam Deacon of Kidulthood, is the fastest selling audio book for Penguin Random House this year.

You Don’t Know Me has received stellar praise from many national newspapers including The Times and Imran was profiled in the Guardian. He also featured as a Simon Mayo book club selection on BBC Radio 2 and was on the Today programme on BBC Radio 4.

Lee Child’s outstanding contribution

Lee Child will be awarded the OutstandingContribution to Crime Fiction Award at the Theakston Old Peculier Crime Writing Festival at Harrogate this year.

No Middle Name, a collection of all the Reacher stories, published together for the first time, has soared into No.3 on the New York Times hardcover bestseller chart and is No.2 in the UK!

Nobody does it better.

This month, Charlie Spicer at St. Martin’s Press acquired North American rights, he said: ‘Like B.A. Paris’s mega bestseller Behind Closed Doors, TM Logan creates an unforgettable novel of suspense out of a chilling human dilemma: what if you learned your wife was having an affair and you believe you are being set up to take the fall for a murder?’

Agency Newsletter: April

Some highlights from last month at the agency, hope you all enjoy!

NewsletterApril2017.jpg

John Connolly and Lee Child – No.1 Bestsellers

We were incredibly proud to see two of our authors secure the highly-coveted No.1 spot – and even more so that it was simultaneous!

Back with the 15th novel in his outstanding Charlie Parker series, John Connolly soared to the top spot with A Game of Ghosts, beating Wilbur Smith’s War Cry and several other well established authors.

This is the second consecutive year that John has gone straight to No.1 on the hardback list.

And the paperback of Night School, the 21st Jack Reacher novel from Lee Child went straight to No.1 with an emphatic lead ahead of the No.2 bestseller, and it stayed comfortably in the top spot for four weeks.

Both authors held the No.1 spot simultaneously for two weeks.

An amazing achievement for both authors and for the agency.

Annie Murray is a No.6 Bestseller

It was a record-breaking month at the agency, Annie Murray’s latest novel The Doorstep Child rocketed into the No.6 spot on the bestsellers chart – the highest position in her career so far.

The Doorstep Child is Annie’s 21st book and is the third novel in a trilogy, featuring 2016’s Now The War Is Over and 2015’s War Babies.

All three novels have been Sunday Times bestsellers.

Tana French – Richard & Judy Book Club

We are thrilled to announce that The Trespasser, the sixth Dublin Murder Squad thriller from Tana French, has been selected for the Richard & Judy Book Club Summer Reads.

The Trespasser is a No.2 New York Times bestseller and won Crime Fiction Book of the Year 2016 at the BGE Irish Book Awards.

It was named as one of the best books of 2016 by Time, Guardian, Wall Street Journal and the Washington Post, among others.

It’s no wonder when Tana can count Stephen King, Gillian Flynn, Kate Mosse, Ian Rankin and Sophie Hannah as some of her fans.

Make sure to check out the R&J podcast in July for an interview with Tana.

Martina Cole – Anniversary Events

Special and exclusive events are happening across the UK to celebrate 25 years of record-breaking bestsellers from the one and only, Martina Cole.

In June, the prolific author will be in London, Scarborough, Newcastle, Liverpool and Manchester discussing the iconic Dangerous Lady and her most recent novel, Betrayal.

Don’t miss your opportunity to see the Queen of Crime in conversation, visit martinacole.co.uk for all the details.

Eoin Colfer, bestselling author of the Artemis Fowl book and former Children’s Laureate introduced Dave at the event and said that The Forever Court was ‘forged in ginger flames and will transcend expectations’.

Tana French continues to triumph

The sixth novel in the Dublin Murder Squad series, The Trespasser, continues  captivate audiences around the world.

It went straight in at No.2 in Germany and later held the No.1 spot for two weeks on the Spiegel chart.

Tana has also been longlisted for the CWA Dagger in the Library 2017. The Dagger in the Library is one of the most prestigious crime writing awards in the UK and previous winners include Alexander McCall Smith and Elly Griffiths.

Lee Child in New Zealand

Jack Reacher continues to conquer the bestseller charts all around the world.

Night School was New Zealand’s  top selling international title in 2016 beating The Girl on the Train by Paula Hawkins and Me Before You by Jojo Moyes.

New Zealand was the first country where Lee achieved success and went to No 1. This was many years ago, long before his success in either the UK or the US.

It would be fair to say that New Zealand discovered Lee first.

Defender is a hardback bestseller

The startlingly imaginative début novel from G.X. Todd went straight on to the UK bestsellers hardback list at No.25.

Defender has received outstanding reviews, impressing both Lee Child and John Connolly. It has been chosen as one of the best sci-fi, horror and fantasy releases of the year so far by the Guardian.

Eric Brown of the Guardian said, ’Defender is lifted way above other novels in the over-subscribed post-apocalyptic subgenre by Todd’s sympathetic characterisation and superb pacing.’

Lies is a bestseller

Lies, the manically twisting debut from T.M. Logan, shot up the eboook bestseller charts soon after its release.

It rose to No.3 on iBooks UK chart and No.11 on the Kindle UK paid chart.

The paperback it published 4th May.

Congratulations T.M. Logan!

B.A. Paris wins Gold Award

The début phenomenon of 2016, Behind Closed Doors, was awarded the Gold award Nielsen | Specsavers Bestseller Awards for sales of  500,000 copies. B.A. Paris was the only début fiction author to win a Gold award. 7 other DA Agency titles won Gold: 4 were by Martina Cole and 3 were by Lee Child novels

Darley ‘the Deal’ does the Double with Lee and Martina

Lee Child’s Night School is the No.1 Bestselling Hardback Fiction title of 2016. And Martina Cole’s Betrayal is the No.2 Bestselling Hardback Fiction title of 2016.

Nicknamed Darley ‘the Deal’ by Martina many years ago, Darley discovered Lee and Martina when they were unpublished.

Their success is no flash in the pan. They have both delivered a succession of No.1 Bestsellers over a period of many years.

We think this is an awesome achievement!

ERIK STOREY: NEW TALENT AT THE DARLEY ANDERSON AGENCY

Why send your submission to our agency? It’s all in the name.

Darley Anderson is personally well known for talent spotting debut writers who have become top bestsellers worldwide. Amongst others these include Martina Cole, Lee Child, John Connolly, Lesley Pearse, Tana French and Chris Carter.

His latest major discovery was an unknown, unpublished 36 year old thriller writer living in Colorado whose first novel, an adventure thriller, had been turned down by 50 New York Agents.

Darley was the only London Agent to show interest in the MS and to promptly sign up the writer, Erik Storey.

Darley then worked editorially with Storey before submitting it to all the major UK publishers. All but one of these publishers turned down the novel. And the only offer Darley received was so derisory that he refused to accept it.

Knowing he had something special, Darley then chose his ideal NY Editor, Rick Horgan at Scribner’s, and sent it exclusively to him.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA
Erik Storey, debut author at the Darley Anderson Agency

Rick was the first person in publishing to share Darley’s belief and enthusiasm for Storey. Now his Clint Eastwood-like central character called Clyde Barr will feature in a series of novels by Storey.

Rick paid a very substantial six figure advance for Storey’s first two novels and worked tirelessly with Storey to make a ‘good’ novel ‘great’.

Says Anderson: “If there is a better Editor in World Publishing than Rick Horgan I certainly haven’t met him/her. Rick has been simply outstanding. He’s the Max Perkins of our time.”

Erik’s novel now entitled NOTHING SHORT OF DYING is being readied for publication in the US for August this year.

Anderson is pleased to announce that Simon and Schuster in the UK have now bought the British and Commonwealth Rights for a substantial advance. And Foreign Rights are being snapped up.

PRAISE FOR ‘NOTHING SHORT OF DYING’

Top selling authors, including Lee Child and Jeffery Deaver, who have read early proofs of NOTHING SHORT OF DYING, have been raving about Erik’s talent!

“Very, very good. It’s all here. Reacher is keeping an eye on this guy. In the rear-view mirror for now, but that’s closer than most.”
–Lee Child, #1 New York Times bestselling author of Make Me and other books in the Jack Reacher series.

“A singular new talent! Storey’s Nothing Short of Dying is nothing short of brilliant. It grabs you from page one and simply doesn’t let go. This man is a born storyteller!”
— Jeffery Deaver, #1 international bestselling author of The Bone Collector and The Coffin Dancer.

Nothing Short of Dying is a relentless thrill ride that hurtles the reader into dark and interesting places. Erik Storey’s somebody to watch…and read.”
— Robert Ferrigno, New York Times bestselling author of Prayers for the Assassin and The Horse Latitudes.

“Nothing short of thrilling… Erik Storey is a gene splice of Lee Child and Joe Lansdale.  In this modern-day gunslinger classic everyone is a bad guy and Clyde Barr is the baddest of them all.”
–Scott Sigler, New York Times bestselling author of Contagious and Alive.

“Jack Reacher fans will delight in meeting the shrewd loner Clyde Barr, but it’s his fearless companion Allie who will sass her way into readers’ hearts. Highly recommended!”
–Kira Peikoff, author of Living Proof and No Time to Die
